About

Please note that the ILAB Missing Books Register is currently in a phase of soft launch and will release the full set of data reported to ILAB since the inception of the former "Stolen Books Database" progressively over the coming weeks. For particular information on books or missing material that is not listed here and to report a missing item, please contact the ILAB Secretariat. The Missing Books Register was created and is hosted by the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB), with the aim to assist in the recovery of missing or stolen books and other associated items such as manuscripts, autographs, antique maps and prints and to discourage future thefts.

Paris Artist - Illuminated Leaves

Reported: 22 Sep 2021
Illuminated leaf on vellum from a richly illuminated Book of Hours, lavishly decorated on both sides of the leaf. Two-line historiated initial showing the head and shoulders of a tonsured priest, text surrounded on all sides by a wide border (on both recto and verso) of coloured flowers and strawberries with a large bird in each upper border, and in each outer border a roundel of a scene from the life of St. Alexis. Size of leaf: 196 x 141mm. 20 lines of text in a liturgical gothic hand. Every leaf of this richly decorated manuscript appears to have contained roundels showing scenes from the life of S. Katherine or Alexis (a 15th century mendicant in Syria), obviously of significance to the original owner. In this leaf the roundel on the recto shows St. Alexis addressing his father and that on the verso shows a priest standing in front of a building (captioned “lenire”).

Dombey and Son - Parts 2 and 3

Reported: 22 Sep 2021
Parts 2 and 3 of the original parts of “Dombey and Son” (i.e. Dealings with the Firm of Dombey and Son: Wholesale, Retail and for Exportation), Nov. and Dec. 1846. The parts are quite a bright blue still. The measurements are 22.4 x 14.3 cm. On the top left of each inside wrapper the following had been written in pencil: [S.L.] I [Dickens – 1848]. The writing sprawled, so would be (or would have been) between 67 and 72 mm long. There were no other ownership markings.

Unfinished Music No.2. (Vinyl LP Record, signed, with original drawing)

Reported: 27 Aug 2021
Stereo LP, catalogue number ZAPPLE 01, being a series of experimental recordings. Original pressing with paper liner and glossy sleeve. A fine ASSOCIATION COPY, with the printed paper inner inscribed by Lennon to Malcolm Davis, a record cutter at Abbey Road and Head of Apple Studios, where this record was produced. He has also added his famous caricature doodle of a bespectacled Lennon with Yoko Ono. LP in fine condition, minor wear to sleeve. The record itself is a rarity, with a current book value of £600. This signed copy is accompanied by a photograph of the Lennons in the studio with the recipient Malcolm Davis seated at a recording console, plus a signed letter of provenance from renowned Beatles expert Paul Wayne of Tracks Ltd. This LP was the second of three (now rare) experimental albums recorded by John and Yoko during 1968-9, before Lennon's rather more successful commercial LPs 'Plastic Ono Band' and 'Imagine' appeared in 1970-1.

GRAPEFRUIT

Reported: 27 Aug 2021
First UK paperback edition. Signed by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Original pictorial card wrappers. A very good or better copy of this notoriously fragile production. The binding square and firm and with a little rubbing and light creasing to the extremities, the spine without the heavy fading usually associated with this title. The contents are entirely complete with no loose or torn pages. The paper stock, toned as usual is otherwise clean throughout. An attractive example, highly desirable in signed state.
