Housed in a black cloth flat back box with chemise. Without the half-title in vol. II. Lightly rubbed, corners bumped, two small chips to spine-ends, lower joint of vol. I cracked below the last cord but holding firm, small gouge to leather on front cover of vol. II, these flaws minor only; an excellent copy in a handsome and unrestored contemporary binding.

LENNON, John.

Title page, A-Z poem, 7 black portrait lithographs and 6 erotic sepia lithographs all on BFK Rives paper. Sheet sizes 58.4 x 76 cm. Glue residue and some skinning to verso of title page otherwise in excellent condition. First edition, one of only 45 Hors Commerce sets, this set uniformly numbered “H.C. XXXIX” in pencil and signed by the artist; from the library of the British art dealer Edward Booth-Clibborn. The first edition of Bag One was issued in 45 hors commerce sets lettered in Roman numerals, and 300 portfolios numbered in Arabic numerals, all individually signed by Lennon. Cinnamon Press of New York issued the first edition in 1970 simultaneously with the first public exhibitions of the lithographs. Complete sets of any iteration of Bag One are extremely rare in commerce, and no complete copy of the one of 45 portfolio has previously been offered for public sale.
